An Element Of Regret

ball

Heart-shaped helium balloon
Once bobbing and jaunty
Filled and fit to bursting, with a noble gas

Until someone let you go
Left you clinging to the ceiling, up high
Lost in shadow and dust

Slowly shrinking
Unreachable
Feeble ribbon adangle, gently swaying

Your pucker’d words, hopeful still –
‘I love you’
But I don’t think the pigeon can read.
